13th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Art. 1
13th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition is organized by Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań and will be held in Poznań, Poland, between 14 and 29 October 2006
Art. 2
Violinists of all nationalities up to 30 years of age, i.e. born after October 15, 1976, are eligible to participate in the Competition. Applications made on the enclosed forms must be submitted by 31 March 2006 at the following address:

Applicants are requested to enclose the following documents:
- short biography,
- certificates of musical qualifications (copies of diplomas or reviews of public performances),
- two recommendations from outstanding violinists or professors,
- two current portrait photographs to be used in the Competition program and press publications,
- non-returnable VHS PAL recording* of the applicant's performance of the following compositions:
- J. S. Bach – Fugue in G Minor, BWV 1001
or Fugue from Second Sonata for Solo Violin in A Minor, BWV 1003
or Fugue from Third Sonata For Solo Violin in C Major, BWV 1005
- N. Paganini – one of capriccios listed in competition programme (Stage 1)
- First or second and third movements of one of the following concertos:
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in G Major, KV 216
or
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, KV 218
or
Concerto for violin and Orchestra in A Minor, KV 219
*Violinist must be filmed in frontal position from a maximum distance of 5 m. Competition organizers reserve the right to reject recordings which do not fulfil the above requirement.
Art. 3
1. Chairman of the Jury determines whether or not an applicant is admitted to participate in the Competition. Applicants shall be notified of his decision by May 15, 2006.
2. Upon receiving decision of admittance to the Competition, applicants are requested to remit an entrance fee of USD 100 or its equivalent in other currency onto the bank account of Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society in Poznań

Payment should be annotated “Wpisowe na Konkurs Skrzypcowy” [Violin Competition Entrance Fee], and a copy of bank receipt should be sent at Competition organizer’s address.
3. Entrance fee is non-refundable should the contestant decide to withdraw from the Competition.
4. Admittance to the Competition shall be tantamount to agreement to participate in it on terms provided herein.
Art. 4
Contestants are obliged to report at Competition Secretariat one day prior to the official opening of the Competition, i.e. on 14 October 2001, to present personal identity documents stating their age.
In exceptional and justified cases, and provided the contestant reports not later than two days before the end of Stage One, he/she may be admitted to participate in the Competition.
Art. 5
The Competition consists of four stages and its program features performance of the following compositions:

Grave and Fuga from 2nd Sonata for Solo Violin in A Minor, BWV 1003

Adagio and Fuga from 3rd Sonata for Solo Violin in C Major, BWV 1005

one capriccio from ”L’ école moderne pour violon seul”, Op. 10;
N. Paganini:
one capriccio from “24 Capricci”, Op. 1, for solo violin (1-12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24);
Free composition for solo violin or violin and piano (up to 12 minutes)

Art. 6
Composition of international Jury chaired by Prof. Konstanty Andrzej Kulka shall be announced prior to the opening of the Competition. Decisions of the Jury are final and non-appealable. Detailed principles of its proceedings are contained in Rules and Regulations of the Proceedings of the Jury.
Art. 7
The Jury pronounce their judgement on the contestants’ performance using grades 1 through 25.
A maximum of 24 contestants shall be admitted to Stage Two of the Competition, a maximum of 16 to Stage Three, and a maximum of 8 shall be admitted to the Final Stage of the Competition.
Art. 8
1. The following six statutory prizes shall be awarded:
First Prize - USD 25,000 and Gold Medal
Second Prize - USD 20,000 and Silver Medal
Third Prize - USD 15,000 and Bronze Medal
Fourth Prize - USD 10,000
Fifth Prize - USD 8,000
Sixth Prize - USD 5,000
Two remaining participants of the Final Stage of the Competition shall receive honorary distinctions of USD 3,500.
All prizes and awards are subject to income tax. In exceptional cases (e.g. shared prizes), motioned by the Jury, the organizers can appropriate additional resources towards prizes.
2. Prize winners have the right to use the title of „Laureate of 13th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition”.
3. Contestants admitted to Stage Three of the Competition receive commemorative diplomas.
Art. 9
The Jury has the right to change the form and number of prizes, provided particular prizes are not lower than these stipulated in Art. 8. In the event of awarding two equal prizes, no subsequent prize will be given.
Art. 10
Should prize winners be offered concert and recording engagements by Polish musical life promoters, they are obliged to accept them by November 6, 2006. For the said concerts (or recordings) promoters shall pay fees as well as cover travel and hotel expenses.
Art. 11
All other pecuniary and non-pecuniary prizes contributed by individuals and institutions should be reported to the Secretariat of the Competition before its opening. When approved by the Secretariat, these prizes shall receive extra-statutory status. Pecuniary awards shall be paid in the currency in which they were deposited by the contributor.
Art. 12
Prizes shall be presented to winners during a Gala Concert closing the Competition. During the concert, the winner of the First Prize shall perform one of the Concertos for violin and orchestra from Stage Four of the Competition. Winners of the remaining prizes shall play solo violin compositions, works for violin and piano or for violin and orchestra. The programme of these performances shall be determined by the Jury in consultation with prize winners.
For their performance during the Gala Concert no separate fee will be paid to prize winners.
Art. 13
1. Contestants of the Competition transfer to Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań, free of charge, their property rights to all artistic performances recorded in all stages of the Competition as well as the Prize Winners' Gala Concert, with respect to their:
1. recording,
2. multiplication on all carriers of sound and image,
3. marketing,
4. loading into computer memory and rendering available on the Internet,
5. public reproduction,
6. screen showing,
7. lease and rental,
8. wireless, cable and satellite broadcasting and re-broadcasting.
2. Contestants also grant their permission to disseminate their images recorded in connection with the Competition and transferred to the Competition Organizer.
3. Contestants grant their permission to process their personal data for the organizational purposes of the Competition, as well as these that meet the statutory goals of the Competition’s organizer.
Art. 14
Secretariat of the Competition shall provide contestants, free of charge, with piano accompanists. Contestants may bring their own accompanists to the Competition. Contestant using an official accompanist of the Competition is entitled to one free rehearsal in each stage of the Competition.
Art. 15
1. Contestants and their accompanists come to the Competition at their own expense.
2. Competition organizers provide contestants and their accompanists with free hotel accommodation and one meal per day throughout the period of their participation in the Competition.
Art. 16
In case of doubts concerning provisions of the present Rules and Regulations the Polish text will take precedence.
