11th INTERNATIONAL HENRYK WIENIAWSKI VIOLIN MAKER COMPETITION
RULES AND REGULATIONS
Art. 1
1. The 11th edition of International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Maker Competition, which is organized by Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań in cooperation with Polish Violin Maker Association and Museum of Musical Instruments, a branch of National Museum in Poznań, shall be held between 7-13 May 2006 in violin class.
2. The Competition is open to professional violin makers of all nationalities and ages. However, 1st Prize winners of previous International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Maker Competitions and closest relatives of the members of the Jury are not eligible for participation in the Competition.
3. To be eligible for participation in the Competition, the candidates must submit their application by 31 December 2005 on the form enclosed in these Rules and Regulations.
4. Application fee per instrument equals 50 US dollars or its equivalent in a convertible currency. When an instrument is personally delivered to the Organizers of the Competition, the application fee is decreased by 50%. In case of withdrawal from the Competition or inability to participate in it, the application fee will not be refunded.
A proof of remittance of the application fee must be enclosed with the application form. The application fee should be remitted to the account of the Musical Society:

Art. 2
Eligible for participation in the competition is an instrument that is an original piece of work, constitutes property of the violin maker who participates in the Competition, was constructed not earlier than 2003 and was not awarded prizes at other competitions.
Cultivating the traditions of the art of violin making, the Jury of the Competition shall consider its duty and obligation to exclude the following from the competition:
- Instruments that bear signs of mechanical processing,
- Instruments of eccentric shapes and colours,
- Instruments that deliberately imitate appearance of old instruments,
- Instruments built of materials other than wood.
Art. 3
Each participant of the Competition is entitled to submit a maximum of two instruments. Should the Jury, following announcement of the results and opening of the envelopes containing names of violin makers, determine that more than two instruments of the same authorship have been submitted for the Competition, all instruments submitted by the violin maker will be automatically disqualified and their participation in the Competition shall be deemed null and void.
Art. 4
The Competition is anonymous, hence all the participating violin makers are obliged to fulfil the following requirements:
- A trustee has to be appointed under whose name an instrument shall be submitted.
- A card bearing the mark of the violin maker should be attached to the scroll of the instrument (if two instruments are submitted by a violin maker, marks attached to both instruments should be different). The mark of the violin maker should be entered in Roman characters. Any additional markings are inadmissible and will result in disqualification of an instrument.
- The packaging containing the instrument should include a sealed envelope ”A” marked with the same mark as the card attached to the scroll of the instrument. The envelope should contain the following data:
- name, surname and nationality of violin maker,
- permanent address, telephone and fax no., e-mail address,
- place and year of construction of the violin,
- the original violin maker certificate,
- a brief CV with two legibly signed colour photographs with consent for their publication,
- two colour photographs - frontal and rear view of the submitted instrument - not smaller than 9x12 cm,
- authorization to perform small repairs to enable the instrument to participate in the Competition. Possible repairs shall be exclusively performed by a violin maker
– Custodian of competition instruments, who does not participate in the Competition.
- A second, unsealed envelope “B”, labelled with the same mark and containing spare stringing of the same type as stringing mounted in the instrument should also be included in the packaging. The type of stringing to be mounted on the instrument is at each violin maker’s discretion.
- All instruments shall be assigned numbers under supervision of a person authorized by the Organizers of the Competition. A list of numbers and marks of the instruments shall be deposited with the authorized person.
Art. 5
Location of the sound post should be lightly marked in pencil on the back board of the instrument to facilitate its placement by the violin maker - Custodian of competition instruments, in cases of displacement or overturning of the sound post.
Art. 6
1. Instruments should be submitted for the Competition by 7 April 2006.
Personal delivery of instruments to the Organizers should be effected by a trustee by 24 April 2006 (3 p.m.). Upon submitting the application form, all participants shall receive confirmation of participation in the Competition and information concerning conditions for delivery of instruments. Confirmations shall be despatched by 15 February 2006.
2. Instruments should be delivered in a manner enabling their return in the original packaging. The mark of the violin maker and a card containing the return address of the sender - person or company - of the package should be contained within the packaging. The card shall be used as the return address at which the package shall be sent after the Competition. The package shall be returned at the participant’s expense.
Art. 7
A participant of the Competition should at his own expense insure the instrument for the period of transportation to and from Poznań, Poland. For the period of presentation of the instruments in Poznań, Organizers of the Competition provide an insurance to the value of 5,000 EURO.
Art. 8
Withdrawal of instruments submitted for the Competition will not be possible before the end of the Competition.
Art. 9
1. Outstanding Polish and foreign violin makers and virtuoso violin players shall be invited to participate in the proceedings of the Jury.
2. Composition of the Jury shall be made public prior to the opening of the Competition.
3. The Jury shall pronounce its judgements on Instruments following the principle of anonymity of the instrument authorship. The principle is to be maintained throughout the entire period of the Competition.
4. Detailed course of the proceedings of the Jury as well as criteria of judgement shall be defined in separate “Rules and Regulations of the proceedings of the Jury”.
5. Decisions of the Jury are irrevocable.
Art. 10
The main objective of the Competition is to select instruments of supreme acoustic qualities and instruments exhibiting supreme artistry of violin making. The course of the Competition will be as follows:
- In Stage 1, Jury members – violin makers - shall perform a general overview of the submitted instruments and eliminate those that do not meet the criteria of the present Rules and Regulations, do not exhibit qualities of artistic workmanship and represent low craftsmanship level. Based on the acoustic property test performed on the rejected instruments, Jury members – musicians - are entitled to reintroduce to the Competition a rejected instrument of exceptionally high acoustic qualities.
In Stage 2, members of the Jury pronounce individual judgements on instruments admitted to the stage: violin makers judge the violin making qualities, musicians judge the functional-acoustic properties. At this stage of the Competition, the Jury members will use a 100 point scale, and the following principles of awarding points shall be introduced:
Violin makers-members of the Jury:
a) technical merit 1-25 pt.
b) assembly, preparation for play 1-20 pt.
c) aesthetic qualities of varnish 1-25 pt.
d) general aesthetic quality 1-30 pt.
Musicians-members of the Jury:
a) volume of sound (max. 5 pt. per string)4-20 pt.
b) tone of sound (max. 5 pt. per string) 4-20 pt.
c) ease of sound emission 1-20 pt.
d) equal sound volume of strings 1-15 pt.
e) accuracy of assembly (height of strings,
nut, smoothness of neck, neck bracket,
purfling and finger board) 1-10 pt.
f) individual qualities 1-15 pt.
Based on the highest scores awarded in Stage 2, the Jury shall determine the number of instruments admitted to Stage 3 of the Competition.
- In Stage 3 of the Competition, the Jury in its full composition shall perform acoustic evaluation of instruments in stage conditions. This part of the Competition will feature invited violin players – soloists, who shall perform accompanied by the piano (in chamber hall) and orchestra (in grand concert hall). Auditions shall be open to the public.
- The sum of the violin making score of Stage 2 and the average acoustic scores of Stages 2 and 3 shall determine the order of awarded instruments.
Art. 11
Results of the Competition shall be announced in mass media.
Art. 12
1. The following statutory prizes are introduced:
- **1st Prize** - 12,000 US dollars
- **2nd Prize** - 10,000 US dollars
- **3rd Prize** - 8,000 US dollars
Prize winners receive honorary diplomas.
- The Jury has the right to alter the number and order of prizes, provided that the total number of prizes is be increased, and particular prizes are not lower than prizes set out in Point 1 above.
- Instruments awarded financial awards become property of the Violin Family Collection of the Ministry of Culture.
Art. 13
Furthermore, the Jury shall award:
- Medal of the Polish Violin Maker Association for the highest violin maker qualities of the instrument,
- Medal of Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań for the highest acoustic qualities of the instrument,
- Special Prize, the ”Złoty Groblicz” award, of the National Museum in Poznań for the most outstanding artistic personality of the Competition.
All other financial awards and prize gifts founded by institutions or private persons, should be presented to the Secretariat of the Competition by 10 May 2006. Prizes accepted by the Organizer of the Competition shall be regarded as extra-statutory, and financial awards shall be paid in currency in which they heave been deposited with the Jury.
Art. 14
On determination of the results of the Competition based on awarded scores, names of violin makers and markings of instruments shall be disclosed. All participants of Stage 3 shall be presented with diplomas of participation.
Art. 15
An exhibition of awarded instruments and instruments admitted to Stages 2 and 3 of the Competition accompanied by the names of their makers shall be held at Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznań between 13 and 30 May 2006.
No fees shall be collected from or paid to the violin makers by the Organizers in relation to the participation in the exhibition.
Art. 16
The Secretariat of International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Maker Competitions and Museum of Musical Instruments in Poznań reserve the right to prepare and publish free of charge photographic and television images of instruments awarded in the Competition.
Art. 17
Any disputes arising in relation to submission of an application and participation in the Competition, shall be subject to jurisdiction of a competent court in Poznań, Poland, and the Polish language version of the present Rules and Regulations shall take precedence.
